Arvind Karthik is a wildlife photographer and the founder of Katrivia Expeditions. He began photographing wildlife in 2014, turned professional in 2019, and works mainly in the Bandipur and Nagarahole tiger reserves.
TL;DR: The best time to visit Bandipur depends on the goal: November to February gives cool, comfortable safaris and migratory birds, while March to May gives the strongest case for wildlife gathered at water. No source reviewed for this guide publishes month-by-month sighting, rainfall or temperature data for Bandipur, so every “best month” claim in circulation is opinion, not measurement. The Serai Bandipur, a resort at the forest edge, puts summer daytime temperatures at 30 to 36 degrees Celsius[1], which is the price of those waterhole sightings. Before booking any month, confirm with the Karnataka Forest Department, Jungle Lodges and Resorts or the park office that Bandipur safaris are running.
Bandipur has no single best season, and published advice disagrees on the window
“Which is the best season?” is the question I hear most often, and my answer for Bandipur is the one I give for every South Indian forest: there is no single best season. Winter, which I count as roughly November to February, brings soft morning light and the most comfortable safaris. Summer, roughly March to May, dries the forest and concentrates sightings around water, and the monsoon, roughly June to September, turns everything green under diffused light.
Published recommendations split along the same lines. The Serai Bandipur says summer is often considered the best season[2] because animals gather around water bodies, which increases the chances of spotting tigers and other wildlife. A former tour guide writing on Quora favours October to March[3] for weather and migratory birds, while conceding that summer may give better odds of seeing animals. Pikwoods, a travel vlogger’s YouTube channel quoted further down, rates the monsoon highest.
None of these views rests on data. Every Bandipur source I could cite is a resort blog, a review platform, a forum answer or a travel video, and most carry no publication date. The Karnataka Forest Department, the Bandipur Tiger Reserve and the India Meteorological Department are absent from that list, so read each window as an informed opinion with an interest behind it.
- Dry deciduous forest
- forest in which most trees drop their leaves during the dry months. Pikwoods describes Bandipur as predominantly dry deciduous mixed forest, where many trees stand without a single leaf in summer.
That definition explains most of the Bandipur calendar. With the leaves down and water scarce, a visitor sees further and animals have fewer places to drink; once the rain returns, the cover closes in. For the same three seasons compared across forests, see my guide to the best season for wildlife photography in India.
How does the Bandipur year run, month by month?
The Bandipur year runs cool, then dry, then wet, with June and October as transition months. That grouping is my own framing: the sources describe seasons, not months, and they disagree on where each season starts and ends. The table sets out what can be said for each block of months and who says it.
| Months | Weather | Forest and water | Easier to find | Light | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| November to February | Cool, with cold starts in an open vehicle | Lush after the rains, per a former tour guide on Quora | Migratory birds, per The Serai Bandipur | Soft morning light | Chilly dawn drives |
| March to May | Hot days | Many trees leafless; water spots drying from April, per The Serai Bandipur | Animals around the remaining water | Harsh at midday, good early and late | Heat and dusty tracks |
| June | Transition into the rains | Dry forest turning green | No source separates June from the wider monsoon | Diffused | Rain on any given drive |
| July to September | Wet | Dense green cover | Birds, per The Serai Bandipur; mammals less predictable | Soft and diffused | Slippery roads, lower visibility |
| October | Transition out of the rains | Still green | One filmed trip recorded big cats, wild dogs, bears and elephants | Not described by any source | Rain can return mid-drive |
Two gaps in that table are deliberate. No monthly rainfall or temperature record for Bandipur appears in any source I could cite, and nobody publishes sightings by month. Inventing a difference between January and February would be easy to write and impossible to defend, so the rows stop where the evidence stops.
November to February brings cool mornings and migratory birds
November to February is the easiest block to recommend to a first-time visitor. The Serai Bandipur calls these months some of the park’s most pleasant weather, citing temperatures between 15°C and 18°C[4]. That range is narrow, and The Serai Bandipur does not say whether it is a daily low, a mean or a full range, so treat it as indicative. Early-morning drives in an open vehicle can feel surprisingly cold; wear layers you can peel off after sunrise.
Birds are the reason to choose winter over summer. Painted storks, spot-billed pelicans and grey hornbills are among the migratory birds The Serai Bandipur lists for the season. Winter is not the only birding season, though: the same source calls the monsoon ideal for birdwatching, so agreement between sources extends only to the migrants.
For a photographer, winter light is the draw. Mornings are soft and atmospheric, conditions are calm, and winter is one of my two favourite periods in Bandipur. You can see it in this winter safari in Bandipur[5].
Which month is best for tiger sightings in Bandipur?
No source names a single best month for tiger sightings in Bandipur, and none publishes sighting data by month. The most repeated answer is the dry season, March to May, and the reasoning is water. According to The Serai Bandipur, water spots start to dry up in April[6], which forces animals out of their territories in search of water and makes them easier to spot. Less dense vegetation in these months also makes wildlife easier to spot and photograph, The Serai Bandipur adds.
Summer has a cost. Days are hot, the midday light is harsh and the tracks are dusty, which leaves early morning and the late-afternoon golden hour as the productive windows. In my experience summer can be excellent, because animals spend more time around available water, but it rewards good knowledge of the forest and the right positioning.
No month guarantees a tiger in Bandipur
One Tripadvisor reviewer, writing in March 2016, reported spotting a tiger .
On the same Tripadvisor thread, another visitor titled a February 2016 review “Best time to visit for spotting – feb/march”. Set beside the March to May advice, that puts March and April in the overlap between the opinions I could find. An overlap of opinions is still not a finding.
Undated answers on Tripadvisor’s question board make the point more bluntly: seeing a tiger is luck, and spotted deer and occasionally elephants are the usual sightings[7]. A decade of returning to Bandipur has taught me to read alarm calls and anticipate movement, and Katrivia still does not promise a sighting in any month.
The monsoon trades easy sightings for green forest and diffused light
The monsoon, June above all, is my other favourite period in Bandipur. Many people assume sightings drop in the rain, and that has not been my experience: some of my most memorable Bandipur sightings have come in this season, when the dry forest turns emerald green and the Nilgiri hills disappear into mist and cloud. I have seen tigers moving in the rain, marking territory and going about their normal activities.
Reliability is what a monsoon visitor gives up. Heavy rain cuts visibility and animals may stay hidden on a given day, and The Serai Bandipur notes that monsoon safaris can be challenging[8] because of slippery roads and wet conditions. The Serai Bandipur also describes the monsoon as ideal for birdwatching and for waterfalls in full flow, though a resort has an interest in occupancy during the wet months. A commonly repeated version of the trade-off is a greener, quieter park with harder sightings, and I would add only that harder does not mean absent.
October sits at the tail of the rains. Pikwoods filmed an October safari in the rain that recorded a tigress, a leopard with a cub, wild dogs, bears and elephants[9], and Pikwoods calls the monsoon the best time to visit Bandipur for the forest itself. One trip is not a sighting rate. What the footage does show is that safaris have run in wet conditions in October.
Is Bandipur open during the monsoon?
Bandipur is described as a year-round destination, and visitors report safaris in rainy months, but no official notice confirms monsoon operations in anything I could cite. The Serai Bandipur makes the year-round statement and lists park hours of 6 am to 9 am and 3 pm to 6 pm[10], without saying whether those hours hold in every season. Blanket statements that Indian tiger parks shut for the monsoon circulate online; nothing I found confirms a monsoon closure for Bandipur.
Four things need confirming before you book any month:
-
Safari status. Ask the Karnataka Forest Department, Jungle Lodges and Resorts or the park office whether Bandipur safaris are operating on your dates.
-
Timings. The morning and afternoon slots quoted above come from The Serai Bandipur, not from a Karnataka Forest Department timetable. Slots can change by season or by order, so reconfirm them close to travel.
-
Fares. No official safari fare appears in any source reviewed for this guide, and I quote none in rupees for that reason. Take the current fee from the official booking channel on the day you book.
-
Crowds. No visitor count by month is published for Bandipur. Katrivia treats October to May as the popular window, and The Serai Bandipur says summer brings fewer visitors without giving numbers or addressing school-holiday demand.
With Katrivia, the safaris are part of the tour and run in jeeps that take at most 7 guests. Katrivia’s South India tours should be booked at least two months in advance.
My months for tigers, elephants and birds
Tigers: March to May, with no single month named
For tigers, the pick is the dry months of March to May, when animals keep close to the water that remains. April and May are the months most often cited inside that window. Ranking them would need sighting data that nobody has published, so I leave the window whole. My personal favourites remain the monsoon, June especially, and winter: the first for green forest and atmospheric sightings, the second for soft light and calm conditions.
Elephants: no source names a month
This guide has no month to give for elephants. None of the sources reviewed ties elephant sightings in Bandipur to a month or a season in a way I can cite. The Tripadvisor answers quoted earlier describe elephants as quite easy to spot, and the October footage from Pikwoods shows several, which is the extent of the evidence.
Birds: November to February
Winter is the pick for birds, since migratory species are the one point on which the birding sources agree. Katrivia also runs dedicated birding tours.
Katrivia’s Bandipur tour is built around jeep safaris in this forest. Current dates, price and inclusions are on the tour page.
Frequently asked questions about visiting Bandipur
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best time to visit Bandipur?
- The best time to visit Bandipur depends on what the visitor wants. November to February offers cool, comfortable safaris, soft light and migratory birds, while March to May offers the best-supported odds of seeing wildlife near water. Published guides to Bandipur disagree on one window, and none of them backs its choice with monthly data.
- Which month is best for tiger sightings in Bandipur?
- No single month is established as best for tiger sightings in Bandipur, because no monthly sighting data is published. The dry months of March to May are the most commonly recommended, with April and May cited most often, and some visitors favour February and March. Tiger sightings in Bandipur depend heavily on luck in every month.
- Is Bandipur open during the monsoon?
- Bandipur is described as a year-round destination by The Serai Bandipur, and visitors report safaris in rainy months, but no official source confirms monsoon operations. Confirm the current status with the Karnataka Forest Department before booking.
- Can you see tigers in Bandipur when it rains?
- Yes, by Arvind Karthik’s account. Arvind Karthik, founder of Katrivia, reports some of his most memorable Bandipur sightings in the monsoon and has seen tigers moving in the rain and marking territory. Heavy rain still makes any single Bandipur safari less predictable, because visibility drops and animals may stay hidden.
- Is winter good for birdwatching in Bandipur?
- Winter is the season most consistently recommended for birdwatching in Bandipur. The Serai Bandipur lists painted storks, spot-billed pelicans and grey hornbills among the migratory birds that arrive between November and February. Birdwatching in Bandipur is possible in other seasons too, and The Serai Bandipur calls the monsoon ideal for it.
- Are tiger sightings guaranteed on a Bandipur safari?
- No, tiger sightings are never guaranteed on a Bandipur safari. Past visitors on Tripadvisor describe seeing a tiger in Bandipur as a matter of luck and name spotted deer and elephants as the more usual sightings. Katrivia does not promise a tiger in any month, including the dry months of March to May.
- How far in advance should I book a Bandipur tour with Katrivia?
- Katrivia’s South India tours, including Bandipur, should be booked at least two months in advance. Safaris on a Katrivia tour run in jeeps that take at most 7 guests and come as part of the tour, not as separate seats. Current dates, price and inclusions are listed on Katrivia’s Bandipur tour page.
